The Dow Industrials represent the productive capacity of the economy, as its original focus was on the goods-producing sector. Over recent decades, the 30-stock Dow Industrials has been expanded to include important tech, telecom and services companies. The Dow Transports, whose constituents move goods and passengers across the country and around the globe, represent final demand. .DJI .DJT YTD line The Dow Industrials vs. Dow Transports in 2024 At the moment, the divergence is relatively mild. Just because the current valuation backdrop isn't as extreme as 1999-2000, we are still in a market bubble, and valuations are even more stretched today than they were at the market peaks in 2007, 1990, and 1980." AdvertisementRosenberg ResearchAnd third, even tech stocks, which have been overwhelmingly supporting the S&P 500, appear to be running out of gas, Rosenberg said. The same goes for Paul Dietrich, the chief strategist at B. Riley Wealth, who says the S&P 500 could fall 49% when the current bubble pops. The bull market has thrown egg onto their faces again and again: since the October 2022 lows, the S&P 500 is up a whopping 42%.

Uber is going into the Dow Transports on Monday, marking the first change to the index since Dec. 7, 2021, when Old Dominion replaced Kansas City Southern. Under Dow Theory, the Transports should confirm a new high in the Dow Industrials. Uber is a funny add because unlike many of the other index components, it's not really a shipping company. The add likely reflects the Dow Transports index committee's belief that this is a transportation company, even if it just shuttles people instead of packages. This follows a well-known pattern called the S & P inclusion effect.

The Dow Jones Transportation Average, which tracks 20 US transportation stocks from railroads to airlines to delivery, has fallen 1.6% so far this year, underperforming the broader Dow industrials’ 2.2% gain. As that optimism dims, some investors worry that the decline in transportation stocks suggests rough times ahead for the economy. The transportation index tends to fall when the economy deteriorates, as demand for travel and goods wanes. Turmoil in the airline industry also likely contributed to the recent slide in transportation stocks. But net profit fell 14% to €4.9 billion ($5.3 billion) as its tax bill rose.

Dow theory: a primer The rules around the Dow Theory were formulated more than 120 years ago by Charles Dow himself (though he himself never used the term Dow Theory). "Dow Theory was formulated when the Dow Industrials were stuff makers, and the railroads were stuff movers," Tom McClellan, editor of the McClellan Market Report, told me. New Dow Theory also confirms a new high There have been attempts to formulate a "New Dow Theory." Tuesday, the S & P 500 closed at 4,554 (up 19% this year), and the Nasdaq closed at 14,354 (up 37% year-to-date). The S & P 500 is up 9% since May 1.

June 27 (Reuters) - U.S. stock indexes rebounded on Tuesday from a recent losing streak as upbeat economic data soothed investor worries about an imminent recession triggered by the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes. While the economic data was encouraging, Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Spouting Rock Asset Management, said the market also rose on seasonal factors. "You'd a bad week in the stock market last week and a bad day on Monday. According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 (.SPX) gained 49.25 points, or 1.14%, to end at 4,378.07 points, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) gained 219.71 points, or 1.65%, to 13,555.49. Perhaps even more surprising, Europe's big banks are wowing the gallery too - showing limited, if any, fallout from the failure of ailing Credit Suisse at the end of the quarter. And so the glass appears half full again despite background tensions around regional U.S. banks and as wider markets brace for several weeks of a U.S. debt ceiling standoff. With Amazon reporting later, its stock rose another 2% ahead of the bell too. The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday narrowly passed a bill to raise the government's $31.4 trillion debt ceiling that includes sweeping spending cuts over the next decade. The dollar was marginally weaker, with crude oil prices struggling to recover from their latest lunge lower this week.
